refreshing.

"Refreshing" in this context means giving a sense of freshness, invigoration, and mental ease.

Contextual interpretation: The sentence describes the experience of smelling an "elegant fragrance" from the lotus flowers, which is described as "tangy, refreshing." Here, "refreshing" emphasizes the pleasant, revitalizing effect of the scent, making the person feel relaxed and happy.Sensory connection: The fragrance is not only strong ("tangy") but also mentally uplifting, creating a feeling of rejuvenation. This aligns with the common usage of "refreshing" to describe experiences that cleanse the senses or restore energy.Emotional impact: The word conveys how the natural scent alleviates stress or fatigue, leaving the individual with a heightened sense of well-being. This mirrors real-life scenarios where fresh scents (e.g., from flowers, rain, or clean air) can improve mood.

Additional analysis:

The phrase "let a person feel relaxed and happy" further clarifies that "refreshing" here refers to both physical and emotional relief. It suggests the scent acts as a natural stress reliever, enhancing the overall serene environment of the lake. The structure of the sentence ("only smell a burst of... refreshing, let a person...") links the sensory input (fragrance) directly to the emotional output (relaxation), reinforcing the cause-effect relationship.

Broader definitions of "refreshing":

Literal: Restoring freshness, as in cooling down on a hot day or drinking water to quench thirst.Metaphorical: Mentally or emotionally uplifting, such as hearing good news or enjoying art.In this text, the metaphorical sense dominates, as the fragrance revitalizes the mind rather than the body.

Cultural and linguistic notes:

In English, "refreshing" is often used to describe natural scents, cool breezes, or clean environments, reflecting a universal human appreciation for stimuli that counteract fatigue or monotony. The choice of words ("elegant fragrance," "refreshing") also elevates the description, suggesting the lotus scent is not just pleasant but sophisticated, enhancing the aesthetic experience of the scene.

Conclusion:The word "refreshing" captures the transformative power of the lotus fragrance, turning a simple sensory encounter into a moment of rejuvenation. It highlights how nature can provide mental and emotional renewal, a theme common in literature and daily life.

Abstract

This article studies two of the four special cases, namely thinking is moving and THINKING IS SEEING, that constitute the metaphor system THE MIND IS A ceptual metapohors are grounded in our common bodily experience of spatial actibities is fundamentally stuctured by metapors consisting of mappings from the domain of body and bodily experiences. It is found that ,while the chinese expressions under analysis largely conform to the conceptual map-pings originally derived from linguistic evidence in English (Lakoff and Johnson 1999),there exists a difference between these two languages that reflects a significant difference between the related cultures. That is,Western cultures' binary contrast between the heart.the seat of emotions, and where the heart is conceptualized as housting both emotions and thoughts. It is a case in which different cultural models interpret the functioning of the mind and the body differently.

1. Introduction

During the past two decades, cognitive science has seriously chanllenged the fundamental assumption that most of our thinking about the world is literal, directly corresponding to an external reality. The result of cognitive linguistic studies show that human minds are embodies, and thinking and reasoning are largely metaphorical and imaginative, shaped by yhe human body(e.g.,Gibbs 1994; Johnson 1987; Lakoff 1987; Lakoff and Johnson

支持句判断法

对于主题句来说 ,看懂文章理解逻辑当然是最优选项。但在时间有限无法充分理解段落大意的时候 ,利用文章结构加以辅助来排除选项,也不失一种方法 。虽然存在文体的区别(议论文,说明文 ,非小说的记叙文),但总的来说,语法行文仍然是按照一定的结构而展开。而这样的段落结构能够帮助我们解题。

我们先来看一个例子:

Transportation planners work closely with a number of community stakeholders, such as government officials and other interested organizations and individuals. For example, representatives from the local public health department might provide input in designing a network of trials and sidewalks to encourage people to walk more. Members of the Chamber of Commerce might share suggestions about designing transportation and parking facilities to support local business.

Which choice most effectively establishes the main topic of the paragraph?

A. Lucrative salaries are a draw for many prospective hotel managers.

B. New elements to the hospitality industry, such as “extended stay” suites, are becoming more popular.

C. One hotel manager in New York City says she enjoys the fast-paced challenges this career offers.

D. Hotel managers also must have the flexibility and willingness to travel.

原文:

Shan Kanagasingham was born in Malaysia, speaks several languages, and studies at a university in Switzerland before working at the Ritz-Carlton in Maui, Hawaii, and the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong. Her most recent job: at the Surrey in New York City, offered her the opportunity, to help upgrade and gain more recognition for the hotel. She oversaw the Surrey’s redesign, which included updating the spa and adding kitchens to suites for “extended stay ” customers. Kanagasingham says she welcomes the opportunity to make her mark on a hotel and to meet people from all over the world.

题目问这一段的主题句。我们根据主题句后紧跟支持句的这个结构,先看原文的第一句 ,讲的是Shan Kanagasingham的个人经历 。根据这一句,我们可以大胆得排除A和B了。A说的是诱人的薪水,跟第一句毫无关系。曾有学生提出 ,B中的extended stay在文章也有提及;但请注意, B选项核心内容为new elements are becoming more popular, extended stay是进一步解释new elements的 。

7. Which choice most effectively introduces the topic of the paragraph?

A. NO change

B. Although we often comment on what is ‘lost’ in the process of translation, we rarely consider what is gained.

C. even the most gifted translators cannot capture all the nuances of the original poem.

D. while poetry is a particularly difficult class of writing to translate, the impossibility of a completely faithful translation extends to prose as well.

原文:

Some translators focus on a single characteristic, but those who take a holistic approach often produce more readable translations. Translators are not invisible and passive mediums through which poems pass during their transformations into other language; rather, each translator is an active agent who enriches the text with his or her own artistic choices. While the literal meaning is important, the work of translators is chronically creative: given a poem, it is their job to find the words that best represent the ideas contained within it, and these words may or may not be precise translations of the original. The sixth line in Sappho’s lyric could be rigidly translated “your laugh makes my heart flutter in my chest,” but Anne Carson’s creative translation--- “put the heart in my chest on wings” ---- draws on the metaphorical elements of the original phrase to create a more powerful image.
